Research assistant in Health Geography

The SPACE intra-create project (Work Package 1) is looking for a research assistant specialized in spatial/statistical analyses. The objectives are (1) To analyze collective mobility in Singapore using graph methods (2) To undercover the relation between mobility patterns and other types of urban determinants (built-up, metro lines, social composition of administrative units, ….) in different temporal context (Pre-Covid 19, during lockdown, nowadays) (3) To detect the relation between mobility, social and ecological environments and the incidence of dengue and SARS-Covid-2.
The Shaping Public Adaptive Capacity For Environmental Diseases (SPACE) project aims to establish an innovative research protocol for disease mitigation in Singapore, focusing on dengue and COVID-19, with the goal of improving urban health and sustainability.
Current knowledge on the risk factors contributing to the emergence and transmission of infectious diseases in cities is mainly based on environmental big data and population statistics, with little attention to the physical design of the urban environment and the entrenchment of society-disease relationships in the city.
However, in order to provide sustainable responses to health challenges, it is essential to deepen knowledge about the perception, behaviours, and practices of local actors and communities regarding health risks. This will allow us to assess the “adaptive capacity” of the population, i.e. the social and technical skills mobilized by individuals and community groups in response to the spread of diseases in different living environments.
To achieve this objective, the proposed approach is to build a computer simulation model that will explicitly incorporate this knowledge.
The research will take place mainly in Singapore, at the premises of CNRS@CREATE.

The candidate will have to code tools to systematically analyze mobility patterns, built-up/vegetation evolutions, surface temperature, social disparities and its relation to infectious diseases spread, notably dengue and SARS-CoV-2. To better understand the mobility patterns and associated virus diffusion in Singapore, the mobility of individuals detected by cell phone companies and Meta data will be used.
The work will involve both the analysis of available data (quantitative and qualitative) and the design, coding and analysis of several datasets (Meta for good, Copernicus, Global Human Settlement, etc.).
EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS
– MPhil defended in social sciences or computer sciences.
– Background and research experience in spatial analyses.
